A truck-sized Idaho potato will be rolled into Franklin County on Tuesday to help a business celebrate its first anniversary.

“Is it real?” is emblazoned on the side of the Big Idaho Potato Truck, a semi-trailer truck hauling a four-ton potato from Idaho.

The Big Idaho Potato Tour and its “Tater Team” will take place August 13 at Primanti Bros. Restaurant and Bar, 863 Norland Ave., Chambersburg.

People are welcome to stop by, check out the truck and learn more about Idaho potatoes and their benefits for a healthy diet. Guests can also learn the true story behind the potato, specifically whether it’s real.

From the Big Idaho Potato Truck marketing website:

“The most frequently asked question is… Is it real? Let’s just say… if it were…

  • The Big Idaho Potato would take more than 7,000 years to grow.
  • Plan to wait two years for baking.
  • If you have a lot of people to feed, these potatoes will make 20,217 servings of mashed potatoes and almost 1 million (970,380) medium-sized French fries!
  • It is 802 times heavier than the largest potato ever grown, which weighed 11 pounds.”

Founded in Pittsburgh in 1933, Primanti Bros. is known for its “Almost Famous” sandwiches, which consist of fresh-cut French fries and coleslaw piled high on grilled meats and melted provolone cheese.

The company opened its 40th store in Chambersburg on July 19, 2023.
