Doylestown restaurant sets the stage for TV docudrama

DOYLESTOWN BOROUGH, PA – A borough restaurant and bar will be featured in a new true-crime docudrama airing nationally on Fox Nation this summer.

In late July, a film crew took over Chambers 19 Bistro and Bar in the heart of Doylestown Borough to shoot scenes for a four-part series telling the previously untold story of George Marquardt, the “Godfather of Fentanyl.” In the early 1990s, the self-taught Midwestern chemist developed fentanyl, a street drug that became widely available and has been linked to hundreds of deaths on the East Coast.

Chambers owner John Wolff said it was exciting to watch the crew transform the bistro into a Boston pub, where a key moment in the investigation takes place. It was also exciting to see about 25 locals appear as extras in the scenes, including some of his own employees, he said.

“They asked me if I wanted to participate, but I respectfully declined,” Wolff said. “But some of our staff came early and had a lot of fun with the production.”

Wolff describes the shoot as “bigger than I thought it would be. I was able to stand behind the scenes and watch them film from different angles. It was crazy how they did multiple takes and how they directed. It was a cool learning experience.”

Wolff said he was contacted by Bryn Mawr-based production company Steven Rotfeld Productions, who asked to use the venue for a day of filming. “The production company knew about our bar and reached out to us. I thought it would be a pretty cool experience, so I said yes, and they showed up with all their equipment.”

The day’s shoot began early at 5 a.m. “When we opened the restaurant for normal hours, they focused on the bar area and stayed there for a couple of hours. They were finished by 4 p.m.,” he said. “We didn’t shut down completely. For us, it was more like half a day.”

While filming with Chambers, Wolff said the people at the production company were “super nice and very understanding.”

The scale of the filming was a first for Chambers. “We’ve hosted Bob Kelly’s show (from Fox 29) in the past. A few other people have filmed here, but not on this scale,” he said.

The scenes shot in Chambers show crucial moments in the series when the police track down the source of the deadly drug.

“As described to us, we are the place where everything happens,” said Wolff. “The FBI is finding out all the details they need to connect Marquardt to the fentanyl. It all happens in the bar.”

The series, hosted by Fox News anchor John Roberts, will premiere on Fox Nation on Aug. 14. The segment with Chambers is scheduled to air Sept. 4. Of course, Chambers’ crew is already planning a viewing party, Wolff said.
