Car lands in ocean near Gearhart, 4 rescued

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – At least four people, including children, were rescued off the Oregon coast Monday when their car became stuck in a deep spot near a sandbar, leaving them waist-deep in seawater.

The car ended up in the ocean between the Del Ray and Sunset beach entrances in Gearhart, neighbors told KOIN 6 News. They said there were five people in the car, while Gearhart Fire Department officials said there were four people. All were tourists.

Gearhart Fire Chief Josh Como said police and fire rescue personnel were dispatched to rescue the five, helping the adults and children out of the car and leading them to shore.

Como said the car got stuck in a depression just off a sandbar and was trapped. No one was injured.

Sons of Beaches, a volunteer group that patrols the beach and helps tow stuck vehicles and assist police, was able to successfully pull the vehicle from the water.
