ALEXANDRIA – New Jersey State Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a phone scam that stole $13,000 from an elderly township woman.
According to police, the woman received a pop-up alert on her computer on July 25 that falsely warned her about a virus and told her to contact Microsoft.
The victim was then told to contact TD Bank’s anti-fraud line. The phone number was later found to be fraudulent. A person posing as a bank representative convinced the victim that she needed to withdraw $13,000 from her account to protect her banking information, authorities said.
She was then picked up at her home by a courier who was allegedly part of the security measure to collect the cash, state police said.
The suspect is described as male, approximately 5’9″ tall, 30-35 years old, with black hair and a black moustache.
