26-year-old Idaho firefighter injured by falling tree during forest fire response

A U.S. Forest Service firefighter from Idaho was injured by a falling tree while fighting a fire in the Salmon River Ranger District on Saturday evening.

Justin “Riley” Shaw, 26, is in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Sacred Heart Medical Center, according to his mother, Dawn Shaw. He was part of the group fighting as first responders, or “initial attack,” on a new wildfire in the area north of Riggins when he was struck by a tree around 9 p.m.

According to a Forest Service news release, Shaw was flown by Life Flight to a hospital in Lewiston and later transported to Spokane.

According to his GoFundMe page, Shaw is suffering from a traumatic brain injury and multiple broken bones and may need to spend months in the hospital.

His family from Boise is asking for financial help to ease the stress of traveling to Spokane, the page says.

His mother wrote in a message to The Spokesman-Review that they were grateful to the people who provided him with life-saving medical attention.

“His crew, the parachutists and everyone at the Forest Service and St. Joe and Sacred Heart hospitals were incredible,” wrote Dawn Shaw. “Justin ‘Riley’ has a long recovery time. We are grateful for everyone’s prayers for a continued healing.”

According to his Facebook page, Justin Shaw has been employed by the US Forest Service since 2018.
