US Forest Service firefighter flown to hospital after tree strike

KAMIAH, Idaho – During initial response efforts to a new wildfire in the Salmon River Ranger District on Saturday, August 10, a U.S. Forest Service firefighter was struck and injured by a tree near Kamiah, Idaho.

The injured firefighter was identified as 26-year-old Justin “Riley” Shaw.

Shaw was initially airlifted to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Lewiston before being transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. He suffered numerous broken bones and a severe brain injury when the tree fell on him.

“We are asking for donations that can help ease the financial burden on his family as they travel back and forth between Boise, Idaho, and Spokane, Washington, to support Riley during his hospital stay, which will last for months,” Courtney Shaw wrote on GoFundMe. “We are also asking for prayers for Riley. Any help is greatly appreciated.”

The GoFundMe page to support Shaw and his family is available here. The page has already raised over $12,000.

More information will be released as it becomes available. Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests management asks for patience during this difficult time.
