Herman appointed women’s tennis coach at Johns Hopkins University

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins Associate Vice Provost for Student Affairs, Director of Athletics and Recreation Jennifer S. Baker announced the termination of Michael Herman as head coach of the university’s women’s tennis team. Herman will be the 11thth coach in program history and comes to the Blue Jays from Samford University, where he spent the 2024 season as an assistant coach.

Herman helped Samford to a 15-8 record and a spot in the Southern Conference title game last season. The Bulldogs’ 15 wins in 2024 are the most for the program in more than a decade. Two Bulldogs were named to First Team All-SoCon in singles and combined for First Team All-Conference honors in doubles. Samford was also named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team.

Herman came to Samford after a three-year stint as an assistant for the Washington College men’s and women’s tennis teams. He served as interim coach for both programs in the spring of 2022. Herman helped the WC tennis programs to a total of 47 wins, including the COVID-shortened 2021 season, as well as four berths in the Centennial Conference Tournament. During his three years on the East Coast, eight singles players and four doubles teams earned All-Centennial Conference honors.

Herman was a four-year honors winner at Goucher College, where he graduated in May 2020 with degrees in business administration and Spanish. He is currently pursuing an MBA at Samford. Herman helped the Gophers to three consecutive Landmark Conference Championships and ranked seventh in program history in doubles wins (44) upon graduation. He was named Landmark Co-Rookie of the Year in 2017 and went on to earn All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles. In his senior year, Herman received the Neumann Award from Goucher’s athletic department.
