Truck driver dead after shooting related to aggression at the wheel

GRANT COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) – A tractor-trailer driver died Sunday night following an alleged road rage incident, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Grant County sheriff’s officials, as well as officers from the Fairmont and Upland police departments, were called to a shooting on State Road 26 around 10:16 p.m., a news release said. A 911 caller reported seeing several shots fired at a semi-truck after the driver allegedly pointed a gun with a laser light at him following an incident of aggression on I-69.

The caller told the dispatcher that the semi-trailer had left the road and entered a cornfield.

As officers were en route to the scene, they saw a fire in the distance, the release said. They found that the driver of the semi-truck struck a silo in the 5000 block of East 975 South after driving about a half-mile through three corn fields.

The driver’s body was found in the cab of the semi-trailer after the fire was extinguished.

The body of the unidentified man is in the custody of Grant County Coroner Stephen Dorsey, the news release said. Dorsey, crime scene investigators, sheriff’s deputies and an investigator with the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the incident.

No arrests have been made so far.
