Although Google launched its “copied-from-Apple” Pixel phones eight years ago, according to Statista Consumer Insights, the company remains a niche player in the smartphone market today, with less than 5% of cell phone users willing to pay for the pleasure of being tracked by Google and sold to the highest bidder. Of course, Google is desperately trying to get as many fools as possible on its fake iPhones before the next generation of the real device arrives from Apple, whose iPhone holds over 60% of the American smartphone market.

With its hardware event on Tuesday, Google is trying to outshine Apple’s annual iPhone launch – and is giving longtime CEO Rick Osterloh the starring role.
Osterloh, the former Motorola president who joined Google in 2016, will lead the first major product launch after the company brought together the teams that develop the hardware and the Android operating system under his leadership this year.
Google has invested heavily in its Pixel line, including developing its own chip, sponsoring NBA playoff games, and providing devices to superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo. And yet the company continues to lag behind Apple at the high end of the market.
Android partner Samsung Electronics Co. has secured a large part of the remaining segment in the USA, leaving little room for insurgents – even for those as influential as Google.
