Borderlands 3: Steam popularity rises after Borderlands movie flop

The Borderlands movie may have been a flop as a video game movie—we even called it a disservice to other, good adaptations—but the good news for Gearbox and publisher Take-Two is that Borderlands 3 is now much more popular on Steam. The FPS game may be half a decade old, but it landed in the top 10 of Steam’s best-selling games chart.

At the time of release, as first noted by GamesRadar, Borderlands 3 is Steam’s eighth best-selling game, beating the PC port of God of War and even Baldur’s Gate 3, which is still in the top 15 over a year after release. The Steam Deck is the top seller, which doesn’t really count since it’s not a game, followed by free-to-play games Counter-Strike 2 and The First Descendant, then Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Borderlands 3 also has as many concurrent players as it did in the months following its release in 2019. Borderlands 3 typically has around 6,000 players, give or take a few hundred, though it often dips to somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000, which is the concurrent player count before the Borderlands movie was released. It rose to 5,000 after launch day, peaking at 12,231 on August 11 before settling at 9,500 – a solid number for a Monday at the start of school.

Perhaps the renewed interest in Borderlands is why Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick wasn’t too worried about the disastrous reviews of the Borderlands movie — although he still wants you to see the film. Please.
