Chancellor Scholz speaks on the phone with the Iranian President.

Scholz and Pezeshkian spoke on the phone on Monday to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East, deputy spokesman Wolfgang Buchner said in a statement, according to the Anadolu news agency.

“The Chancellor expressed his great concern about the danger of a regional conflagration in the Middle East. He appealed to President Pezeshkian to do everything possible to prevent further military escalation,” said Buchner.

“The spiral of violence in the Middle East must be broken now. Anything else poses incalculable risks for the countries and people in the region,” he added.

The call came against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the region following the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh by the Zionist Israeli regime in Tehran. Iran had announced that it would respond to the violation of its territorial integrity.

During his phone call with the Iranian president, Scholz also underlined the importance of ongoing diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and said that achieving this goal would be a decisive step towards de-escalation in the region.

“The Chancellor stressed again that it is time to conclude the agreement on a ceasefire and the release of the hostages in the Gaza Strip and to implement it immediately in order to end the fighting. This would be an important contribution to regional de-escalation,” said Buchner.
