Security guard fired for stunt driving in shopping mallTom Pennington – Getty Images

In an incident that seemed like a scene straight out of one of Kevin James’ Paul Blart Movies: A security guard at a Southern California mall has lost his job after a video went viral on social media showing the employee driving recklessly in a company car and apparently trying to put on a show for a group of onlookers.

According to a report by KTLAThe exact date of the incident is unknown, but footage of the incident was first posted to Instagram by user south.bay.responders on Saturday, August 10. The post claims the pranks were filmed around 11:30 p.m. and took place in one of the parking garages of the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance, California, according to KTLA.

The footage begins with a shot of an Allied Universal Security vehicle accelerating sharply and driving around a row of parked cars before the driver appears to attempt to push the rear around. (Since the security guard was driving a Ford Escape, no gymkhana action was seen.) The video continues with footage from inside the vehicle, where the driver speeds past other vehicles, narrowly missing some after some aggressive steering maneuvers. Kendrick Lamar’s hit “Not Like Us” blares in the background for most of the incident.

The video also shows another member of the group climbing a large staircase on the mall premises with his vehicle. In general, the behavior is somewhat consistent with what is often described as takeoverin which participants block public roads or intersections to perform dangerous stunts. The relatively small size of the crowd at the mall makes it difficult to call this gathering a real takeover, but the security guard’s actions do not paint a good picture in any way. His employer agreed and issued the following statement KTLA:

“The behavior in the video is in direct violation of company policy and is completely contrary to what we expect from our team members. As a result, the safety professional will be immediately terminated and reported to the California Department of Motor Vehicles.”

Consider this a reminder: While it’s great to have fun in the car, it’s important to do so in a respectful manner and in the safest environment possible. Most of the time, that’s going to be a trip to the race track, not the local mall. Oh, and you probably shouldn’t use your work car to make donuts.
