MORTON TOWNSHIP – A man died early Monday morning when his pickup truck crashed into a power pole near Canadian Lakes.

On Monday, August 12, at 6:40 a.m., Mecosta County officers responded to a fatal crash at the intersection of Pierce Road and Old Pierce Road. According to a press release from the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Office, a 54-year-old Morley man was driving east on Pierce Road when he failed to negotiate the turn.

“The truck drove straight through the intersection and hit a power pole,” the press release said. “Then the vehicle overturned. The driver was thrown from the vehicle and was trapped underneath it.”

The Morton Township Fire Department and Mecosta County Emergency Medical Services assisted officers on scene, along with the Mid Michigan Medical Examiner’s Office, Hilltop Towing and Meceola Central Dispatch.

This is the second fatal crash in Mecosta County since Friday. The first crash occurred on Friday, August 9, at 2:29 p.m. According to police, a 64-year-old man was pronounced dead after an SUV driven by a 33-year-old woman from Remus collided with his car at the intersection of 8 Mile Road and the northbound exit ramp.

His passenger, a 64-year-old woman, was flown by helicopter to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids with serious injuries.
