Tornado hit New Paltz on Friday, National Weather Service confirms – Daily Freeman

NEW PALTZ, NY — The National Weather Service confirmed Monday that there were no injuries or building damage after a tornado touched down near Exit 18 on the Thruway Friday evening.

Meteorologist Brian Furgis of the National Weather Service in Albany said photo and video evidence helped meteorologists determine that the short-lived EFO tornado, with maximum winds of 76 mph, touched down near Exit 18 at 5:51 p.m. and moved northwest for about a half-mile before lifting off at 5:52 p.m.

The damage was limited to a few fallen trees, Furgis said.

“Fortunately, no cars or anything like that were hit,” said Furgis. He also said that no damage was done to buildings.

Furgis said the tornado was so weak and came and went so quickly that meteorologists didn’t even have a chance to issue a tornado warning. “Short and weak tornadoes don’t always have radar signatures,” he said. “This one happened and was gone almost as quickly as it appeared.”

When the tornado occurred, the entire Mid-Hudson region was under a tornado warning as the remnants of Hurricane Debby moved through the region on Friday, bringing heavy rainfall to the area.

He added that the photos and videos provided to meteorologists helped them even confirm that the fallen trees were caused by a tornado.
