Borderlands film flops with disastrous opening weekend

While many fans of the franchise are patiently waiting for news on Borderlands 4, the Borderlands movie had the opportunity to fill that void and generate additional attention for the franchise. Unfortunately, it looks like it missed its chance, as the Borderlands film flopped on opening weekend and is currently one of the worst-reviewed films of the year.

Borderlands film suffers a serious setback on opening weekend

Unsurprisingly, Variety reports that Eli Roth’s Borderlands film did terribly on its opening weekend. With a production budget of around $115 million and marketing and distribution costs of around $30 million, the film’s opening weekend gross of just $16.5 million ($8.8 million domestic and $7.7 million international) is a huge blow. Variety reports that “nearly 60% of Borderlands’ production costs were covered by international pre-sales,” but that’s still a terrible haul.

Starring Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramirez, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film received a barrage of negative reviews from critics. The film currently has a measly Metacritic score of 27 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 9%, making it one of the worst-reviewed films of the year.

“It’s a total failure,” David A. Gross, head of film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, told Variety. “If an action comedy is going to work, it has to be funny, and almost no one believes that’s the case with this film.”

While the Borderlands movie may not be a favorite among fans of the franchise, hopefully we can look forward to some new games. Last year, a former Gearbox employee mentioned Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 on LinkedIn, so hopefully we’ll hear something soon.
