Will breakdancing return to the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028? What to know about the sport’s fate after Raygun’s disastrous performance in Paris

Breaking made its highly anticipated debut on the world stage at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

While dozens of talented B-Boys and B-Girls competed for medals, many spectators were fascinated – and confused – by the performance of Australian Raygun.

The 36-year-old university professor rose to prominence after she awkwardly fidgeted and hopped around the dance floor like a kangaroo, showing far less skill than her competitors and scoring zero points.

This led fans to wonder whether the controversial sport would return at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

It was previously confirmed that breaking is not one of the sports that will be featured in the next Games.

Although a return could happen if the 2032 Olympics are held in Brisbane, Australia, leaders say this is unlikely.

“It was a miracle that we were even in Paris,” said Zack Slusser, vice president of Breaking for Gold USA and USA Dance, according to NBC.

“Being present with the right people who can bring real change and growth to our community and our platform will be of great importance to us. This will enable us to achieve sustainability for the first time and improve our platform,” Slusser continued.

“It would be great if breakdancing were back at the Olympics. At the same time, it’s also about working together again and taking advantage of this opportunity internally.”

When California hosts the next Olympic Games, six new sports will be added to the program: cricket, flag football, baseball, softball, lacrosse and squash.

While flag football and squash are being played at the Olympics for the first time, cricket and lacrosse are returning to the program for the first time in over 100 years.

Baseball and softball used to be part of the games, but they were eliminated in 2008.

This comes amid widespread discussion surrounding Raygun (whose real identity is Rachael Gunn) and her now viral appearance in Paris.

Even Adele canceled her concert in Munich at the weekend to reveal: “This is all that me and my friends have been talking about.”

“I’m not saying anything, but I think it’s the best thing that’s happened at the Olympics in a long time,” Adele told her fans, noting that she wasn’t sure if Raygun was a serious competitor.

“I can’t say if it was a joke, but either way it made me very, very happy and my friends and I laughed our heads off for almost 24 hours,” she continued.

“I just wanted to know if you saw it. If not, please leave the show and google it because it’s LOLZ.”

Raygun remained relatively reserved after her performance, but made a statement on social media amid the flood of comments.

“I wanted to come here and do something new, different and creative – that’s my strength, my creativity,” she said.

“I never intended to beat these girls in what they do best, which is dynamic and powerful movements. That’s why I wanted to move differently, to be artistic and creative, because how often in life do you get the chance to do something like that on an international stage.”

“I was always the outsider and wanted to make an impression in a different way.”
