Cathay’s “1 Ticket, 1 Tree” returns for the fourth time and is expanded to include cargo contributions

In addition to the airline tickets purchased, Cathay will plant a tree for every ton of cargo shipped in Southeast Asia from July 25 to 31, 2024.

SINGAPORE – Media OutReach Newswire – July 24, 2024 – Cathay is proud to announce the fourth edition of its annual 1 Ticket, 1 Tree initiative across Southeast Asia, reaffirming its commitment to supporting local communities, restoring local habitats and promoting climate resilience. From July 25 to 31, 2024, Cathay will plant one mangrove tree in Southeast Asia for every flight ticket purchased from Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia during this period. The airline will include both tickets purchased through cathaypacific.com and the Cathay app, as well as those booked by corporate customers through Cathay agents.

Since its launch in 2021, 1 Ticket, 1 Tree has gained momentum in Southeast Asia, resulting in the planting of 30,000 mangrove trees. The initiative has involved 13 partners, including corporates, non-profit organizations, and local environmental and community groups, who have joined Cathay in its efforts to educate communities, plant trees, and ensure the sustainable growth of the trees.

Expansion of “1 Ticket, 1 Tree” to Cathay Cargo

This year, Cathay is expanding its tree planting initiative to cargo shipments across the region in addition to purchased airline tickets. The company is proudly launching “1 tonne, 1 tree”, pledging to plant a mangrove tree for every tonne of cargo booked by Cathay Cargo’s agents and freight forwarders in Southeast Asia from July 25 to 31, 2024.

This expansion underlines Cathay’s commitment to fostering strong partnerships and joint actions to build a more sustainable future.

Dominic Perret, Cathay’s Regional General Manager for Southeast Asia, said: “Given the important role that mangrove forests play in supporting local communities and protecting their livelihoods, we are keen to do our part to help them grow and thrive. We are therefore very encouraged by the strong support that ‘1 Ticket, 1 Tree’ has received across Southeast Asia since we launched this initiative four years ago – more and more partners are coming on board and the involvement of our cargo agents this year is another step in strengthening our joint efforts.”

Ashish Kapur, Cathay’s Regional Cargo Manager for Southeast Asia, said: “We are delighted that our cargo agents and freight forwarders are supporting us in our tree planting activities this year. Our aim is to raise awareness of the crucial role our mangrove forests play in our ecosystem and make it easier for everyone to get involved and make a meaningful impact on our local communities in the region. We have spoken to our local cargo partners and their response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Greener together: Cathay’s commitment as a pioneer in sustainability

As one of the first airlines in Asia to set a target of replacing 10% of its total fuel consumption with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) by 2030, Cathay is fully aware of the challenges of transitioning to more sustainable energy in aviation. To address this, Cathay is adopting a collaborative philosophy, “Greener Together”, and calls on all stakeholders to join forces in this important goal. Beyond SAF, Cathay has also made important progress in other aspects of decarbonization towards its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Taking the lead in aviation sustainability efforts in Asia, Cathay announced the expansion of its Fly Greener carbon offset program to its air cargo services in 2022. Customers can use an integrated carbon emissions calculator to calculate the carbon emissions of shipments and the cost of offsetting them. They can then contribute to purchasing carbon offset credits sourced from carefully selected carbon offset projects.

For detailed information on Cathay’s sustainable development performance and commitment, please see the 2023 Sustainability Report, available here. Key highlights include commitment to near-term climate improvements, accelerating the use of SAF and transitioning to more sustainable use of resources.
