RV campers must leave camp near San Francisco Zoo

SAN FRANCISCO – Dozens of people, including many families, who have been living in their mobile homes on Zoo Road in San Francisco are trying to quickly move to any other location after a city violation notice was issued.

These notices were issued by SFMTA, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

They were placed on RVs on August 8 to warn of impending tickets and/or towing if the vehicle’s occupants did not move by August 11. When the deadline passed on Sunday, many RVs were still parked along Zoo Road.

New signs on the road also indicated that no stopping or parking would be permitted from August 14 to September 14 due to street cleaning and road markings.

Those still living on Zoo Road on Sunday were packing their belongings while others waited for transport to move their caravans or motorhomes.

“(The city) already took my truck away, so I can’t even move my trailer because they took my truck away. I’m stuck in the water until my friend comes and helps me move it,” said Sean, a San Francisco native who lives in a trailer with his wife. “I’m afraid to go to work right now because I’m afraid they’re going to tow my trailer with my wife in it or something. That’s what I’m afraid of. That’s not fair. That’s not right.”

The majority of families, including many immigrants from Central America, moved to Zoo Road after the city began enforcing parking restrictions on Winston Drive, about a mile and a half away.

“If they were going to tow her anyway, why didn’t they just do it from Winston (Drive)?” said Joyce, who lives in a mobile home with her husband. “I feel sick. I’m just waiting.”

Joyce, who has lived in Zoo Road for about two years, said she also received a notice to move out by August 11, but based on street signs along Zoo Road, she believes she has until August 14.

CBS News Bay Area reached out to the SFMTA and the mayor’s office for clarification regarding Sunday’s deadline but did not receive a response.

“It’s traumatic, man. We’re just trying to live here. We’re just trying to survive,” Sean said. “Nobody’s bothering anyone out here. There are no junkies here. These people are just trying to live.”
