Houses, cars and fences in Colleton County almost completely under water

COLLETON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – In a community along McDanieltown Road, which is fed by the Edisto River near Givhans Ferry, people are facing floodwaters up to six feet high.

Neighbors report that many had to leave their cars behind and were therefore evacuated.

“You know, it took all of us by surprise that it rose so high,” said parishioner David Bresch.

Since Sunday evening, unpaved roads have been part of a canal that flows into the Edisto River.

Two people who were born and raised in this community said they had never seen anything like it before.

“If you don’t have to drive down McDaniel Town Road, please avoid it. There are bare spots and it’s really dangerous,” said community member Darriel Council.

Bresch agreed.

“In 2015, I think the value was around 16.2, but that was the highest value anyone has ever seen, no one has ever seen anything like it,” Bresch said.

On Sunday, the river reached its highest level of 5.2 metres, bringing rain from the north of the state.

According to Bresch, after the flood of the millennium, part of his property was not considered a flood zone, but there was a water level of 18 centimeters in one garage.

“I know a guy, a neighbor, who has been here for almost 60 years and he has never seen such a height.”

He said they think it could take about a week for it to crash, unless it rains…

“Life out here is like being on a river, you just go with the flow, look after each other, and then the flow goes back. We go back to normal life and wait for the next flood,” Bresch said.
