Tax Free Weekend a great success for furniture retailers

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts (WGGB/WSHM) — Another tax-free weekend is over in the Bay State and shoppers have taken full advantage of it.

The people we spoke to on Sunday were buying furniture and said the immediate 6.25 percent discount was pretty nice.

At Pieroway’s Furniture in West Springfield, Western Mass News found success stories of shoppers who were able to shop during the tax-free weekend, an annual holiday in which sales tax is waived on eligible personal purchases valued up to $2,500 on both Saturday and Sunday.

Sarah Fay’s task was to decorate her new home in Northampton, and to make it a success, all she had to do was choose a colour for her new sofa.

“I like the green of the sofa, but I’m also thinking about blue and a softer fabric,” she said.

Meanwhile, Garett DiStefano took advantage of the nice weather to look for new bedroom furniture for his daughter.

“It’s a great weekend to take advantage of some special deals and support the local economy at the same time. It was a win-win situation for us,” he told us.

They weren’t the only ones who appreciated the 6.25 percent sales tax cut. Manager Chris Ouimette said it was their busiest weekend of the year and they estimated they were able to record 100 sales.

“And that’s just the tickets. Usually there are 4-5 pieces on the tickets,” he claimed.

Although stores are closed, online shopping is still possible. Items affected by the tax cut simply need to be purchased by the end of the day.
