Kim Kardashian thanks Colorado governor after truck driver’s prison sentence reduced to 10 years

Kim Kardashian has thanked Colorado Governor Jared Polis for reducing to 10 years the lengthy prison sentence of truck driver Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, who was sentenced to 110 years in prison for a fatal car crash.

On December 13, 2021, Judge A. Bruce Jones sentenced Aguilera-Mederos to more than 100 years in prison for his role in a pileup on a Colorado highway in 2019. Aguilera-Mederos was found guilty on 27 counts, including four counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Aguilera-Mederos, a 23-year-old Cuban immigrant at the time, was driving an 18-wheeler on Interstate 70 in Lakewood, near Denver, for his job at a trucking company. When the vehicle’s brakes failed, it slammed into 28 cars, setting off a massive explosion and killing four commuters stuck in rush-hour traffic.

Earlier this month, Kardashian supported growing calls for Polis to commute Aguilera-Mederos’ sentence. She said she had been looking “intensively” into Aguilera-Mederos’ case, which has attracted national and international attention, to “find out what the situation is.”

At the time, Kardashian wrote in posts to her 271 million followers: “He (Aguilera-Mederos) was not drunk or under the influence of drugs (at the time of the accident). His brakes on the semi-trailer failed.”

On Thursday (December 30), Governor Polis reduced Aguilera-Mederos’ prison sentence to 10 years.

In his commutation letter to Aguilera-Mederos, Polis wrote: “The length of your 110-year sentence is simply disproportionate to your crimes or the sentences imposed on others for similar crimes.”

Shortly thereafter, Kardashian, who has proven herself to be a staunch advocate for US prison reform, posted a copy of the official decree in a series of Instagram stories and thanked Polis for his “empathy and leadership” in the case.

The 41-year-old reality TV star wrote on Instagram: “Although his new sentence is 10 years, he now has the opportunity to come home in five years and be with his son and wife. (This case) was a clear example of why mandatory minimum sentences do not work and must be abolished.”

Kardashian is studying law and recently announced that she passed the exam for first-year law students (the so-called “Baby Bar”) in California.
