One dead after two-vehicle crash near Greenwood

GREENWOOD, Nebraska (KOLN) – One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Greenwood Sunday morning.

According to Greenwood Fire Chief Mark Sobota, emergency crews were called to mile markers 419 and 420 near Greenwood at 3:30 a.m. after a crash was reported between a pickup truck and a semi-trailer.

According to the Nebraska State Patrol, a Ford Econoline van was reportedly traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when the van collided head-on with a semi-truck.

The driver of the van, an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-trailer was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

The name of the deceased driver will be released after the family has been notified.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Cass County Emergency Management assisted with this incident.

The investigation is being conducted by the Nebraska State Patrol.

NSP said eastbound I-80 was closed for about three hours due to the accident.
