Grumet of Mill Valley wins national tennis title

Mill Valley’s Gus Grumet lived up to his reputation as the top seed by winning the USTA 16 National Championship in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Sunday.

Grumet defeated Arin Pallegar of Granite Bay in Sunday’s final in three sets, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-6 (2), to win the tournament.

Grumet also needed three sets to defeat No. 6 seed Keaton Hance 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in Saturday’s semifinals.

Grumet, who plays for University High in San Francisco, receives automatic entry into the main draw of the US Open Junior Boys, which begins Sept. 1. Grumet also won the USTA Boys 16 Clay Court National Championships in Delray Beach, Florida, earlier this summer.
