Amateur Luke Clanton had to get up early on Sunday morning and play three holes to complete his second round and make the cut. When play was suspended due to darkness on Saturday, he was on the cut line at 4 under par. He made two pars and a birdie on his final hole, No. 9.

“I couldn’t sleep well because I knew I had three holes left that were pretty tough,” he said. “They’re probably the toughest three holes I’ve played in a long time.”

Clanton relaxed and got into his stride, shooting 8-under-par 62, his third round of 63 or better, the best performance on Tour since his U.S. Open debut in June. Clanton was a share of the lead when he holed the 11th.th hole, his second hole of his final round, when Matt Kuchar made a bogey in his third round at 14. Doc Brown would say the space-time continuum was out of whack all week at the Wyndham. Clanton is trying to become the second amateur to win on Tour this season. Nick Dunlap won the American Express earlier this season, the first amateur to do so since Phil Mickelson in 1991.

Clanton, a 20-year-old junior at Florida State, is scheduled to play in the U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine National in Edina, Minn. The stroke play portion of the championship begins Monday. Between rounds, Clanton said he has a plan to get there when the Wyndham ends on Sunday.

“I’m actually flying to Minnesota on a private plane, which is very nice,” he said. “It’s pretty expensive, but whatever.”

Clanton could potentially complete three rounds in one day and may have to play 39 holes and then take a flight. When asked how he will do that, he said: “It’s going to be pretty brutal, no doubt, but I signed up for it too. It’s cool to be busy, I’m excited to be here. Playing 36 on the PGA Tour, I’m never complaining. I’m still an amateur, 20 years old, so I’m going to enjoy it.”
