USA Gymnastics finds new evidence to refute Jordan Chile’s bronze medal decision

USA Gymnastics is fighting for Jordan Chiles to keep her bronze medal.

In a statement released Sunday evening, the organization said it had received new video evidence challenging the International Olympic Committee’s decision on Sunday to strip Chile’s bronze medal and give it instead to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu.

USA Gymnastics submitted an official letter requesting the restoration of Chiles’ score of 13.766, which was enough to win the bronze medal in the floor exercise final.

“The time-stamped video evidence provided by USA Gymnastics shows that Landi first made her request for an investigation at the examination table 47 seconds after the result was released, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the result was originally released,” the organization said in a statement. “The video footage provided was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribunal’s decision and therefore USAG did not have the opportunity to provide it previously.”

The controversy over the bronze medal began one day after the competition, when the Romanian Gymnastics Federation lodged a protest with the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against an appeal by Chilean coach Cecile Landi.

Shortly after Chiles received her score for her floor exercise, Landi appealed to the judges because she felt the gymnast’s difficulty rating was too low. The challenge was successful and Chiles’ score was raised from 13.666 (fifth place) to 13.766 (third place).

However, a panel of judges ruled Saturday that Landi had appealed 64 seconds after completing the routine, four seconds over the one-minute time limit. USA Gymnastics now reportedly has video evidence that refutes that decision, saying that Landi actually appealed 47 seconds after the score was announced.

Not only did USA Gymnastics defend Chile, the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee also announced that it would appeal the ruling in Chile’s case.

“The USOPC will appeal the recent decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding Jordan Chile,” the organization said in a statement on Sunday. “We firmly believe that Jordan rightly deserved the bronze medal and that there were critical errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent appeal process by CAS that must be corrected.”
