Discovery World “Wheels & Water”: Children explore large vehicles

At Discovery World on Sunday, children explored some of the biggest trucks the city of Milwaukee has to offer.

The honking usually comes from a frustrated driver, but behind all the background noise were children in giant machines.

“We love to see him just marveling, exploring and asking all kinds of questions,” says Emily McHugh.

The Discovery World show “Wheels & Water” featured a fire truck, street sweeper, gritter and more. A Milwaukee Fire Department boat even put on a water show.

Bryce and his little sister Olivia were glad they came. They said they really liked the cherry picker.

“I didn’t know it was that deep. That high,” Bryce said. “When I got there, it actually felt pretty cozy.”

Sunday’s event was also an opportunity to meet the workers who drive the large vehicles every day.

“I always watched bulldozers tear down houses,” said Ernest Stubbs, a construction equipment operator and instructor for the city.

“I couldn’t wait to be the guy with the equipment. I was dirty and got in trouble with my mom for playing with my Tonka toys,” he added. “I was just practicing as a kid.”

Stubbs is living his childhood dream and hopes that Wheels & Water will inspire a new generation.

“Hopefully when they’re teenagers they’ll remember, ‘I want to make this equipment and help the city,'” Stubbs said.
