As the Olympic Games come to an end, Paris security services are turning their attention to the closing ceremony

PARIS (AP) – As the Olympic competition comes to an end on Sunday, Paris police and security services are turning their attention to the Closing ceremony that will bring down the curtain on the Summer Games 2024.

More than 30,000 police officers were deployed in the French capital and beyond to monitor the recent Olympic Games, including the Women’s MarathonWomen’s modern pentathlon in Versailles and Women’s Basketball Final between France and the United States.

Hours before the closing ceremony, French police evacuated the area around the Eiffel tower after a shirtless man was seen climbing the 330-meter-high landmark. Police intervened and the man was arrested.

After the elaborate open-air ceremony which opened the Games, the closing show in Paris will take place at 9 p.m. at the Stade de France in the northern suburb of Saint-Denis. According to the organizers, it is expected to last just over two hours.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said there was “no (terrorist) threat specifically targeting the closing ceremony.” About 3,000 police officers will be stationed around the Stade de France until Sunday night, in addition to at least 20,000 police and other security forces already mobilized in Paris and the Saint-Denis area.

They will ensure the safety of heads of state attending the closing ceremony, fans using public transport late at night to get to the stadium and their accommodation, as well as the athletes’ final night in the Olympic Village, Darmanin said.

The show will last late into the evening and maximum security will allow us to “celebrate our athletes and the Olympic Games, which have been very successful in sporting and organizational terms as well as in terms of safety,” said Darmanin.

Just hours before the opening ceremony on July 26, French traffic was thrown into chaos after a series of coordinated “malicious acts” disrupted the high-speed rail lines. Officials said the Arson and other acts of vandalism on the rail network are a form of sabotage on decisive day of the gamesDuring the ongoing investigation, no arrests were made in connection with the attacks.
