Vance advocates an extension of the child tax allowance: “It should be higher”

Senator JD Vance (R-OH) said he believes the child tax credit should be expanded more than under President Joe Biden’s administration.

When asked by CBS News Face the nation If he agrees with Biden’s child tax credit, Vance said, “it should be higher.” The child tax credit is a tax break for parents with dependent children.

“We should increase the child tax credit,” Vance said. “We think it should be larger. I think President Trump and I agree that we should increase the child tax credit, but we also want to get this done, which is important.”

Vance also said that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer failed to increase the child tax credit in the Senate. Earlier this month, Vance was absent from a Senate vote on expanding and maintaining the child tax credit because he was in Arizona visiting the southern border. The majority of Republican senators did not vote for the bill.

When asked what a second Trump administration would do to expand the child tax credit, Vance said he would increase the amount to $5,000 per child and stop paying parents unexpected medical expenses.

“One possibility is to increase the amount per child. I think we would like to see it at a higher level. I mean, look, I would like to see a child tax credit of $5,000 per child. Of course, you have to work with Congress to see if that is possible and feasible,” Vance said.

“We also proposed a bill, Margaret, to put an end to the practice of parents getting these surprise medical bills when they go to the hospital, have a baby, choose an out-of-network provider and come home with unexpected bills,” Vance said.

He said the $5,000 increase he proposed would be “broad-based” and would apply to all families.

“I think you want it to apply to all American families. I don’t think you want this massive cut to low-income families that exists now. You don’t want a different policy for higher-income families. You just want a family-friendly child tax credit,” Vance said.

Vance also advocated allowing grandparents, who may be a child’s primary caregiver, to claim the child tax credit. When asked whether gay families would be covered by Trump and Vance’s child care policies, Vance said, “Of course, all families would be included.”
