Louisiana State Police urge drivers to be cautious in school zones and near school buses

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – As the new school year begins in the Baton Rouge area, Louisiana State Police are urging residents to drive carefully in school zones, near school buses and when transporting children.

“All motorists must remain alert and obey the rules of the road to protect the well-being of drivers and our young students,” LSP said in a press release.

When driving in school zones, drivers should pay attention to traffic officers and obey posted speed limits. According to the LSP, drivers should expect immediate stops and increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic during drop-off and pick-up times.

Drivers should also adhere to hands-free zones in school zones. According to LSP, all drivers are prohibited from using their cell phones to talk, text, or access social media platforms in these zones. Drivers are encouraged to stay focused when traveling through school zones.

When drivers approach a school bus with flashing red lights, they must come to a complete stop at least 30 feet in front of the bus, according to LSP. LSP states, “Drivers must remain stopped until the bus stop arm is retracted and the bus resumes its journey.”

When is the first day of school at Baton Rouge area schools?

According to LSP, special caution is required near school buses as a child could suddenly run onto the road.

Louisiana law requires drivers who take children under the age of 13 to school to have them ride in the back seat of the car whenever possible.

“For younger children, it is recommended that they be transported rear-facing until they are two years old or until they exceed the weight or height limits of their car seat,” LSP said in a press release.

Older children who can face forward should use the interior belt up to its weight limit, which LSP says is 65 pounds for most seats. Click here to learn more about child seat laws and installation station locations.
