Banksy unveils his seventh animal-themed work in the City of London within a week

LONDON – Banksy unveiled a new artwork depicting a school of fish on a police watchtower in London on August 11. It is his seventh animal-themed work to appear in the British capital in the last week.

The series, created by the elusive street artist, has sparked enormous media interest and questions about its meaning.

Banksy – whose identity is publicly unknown and the subject of feverish speculation – confirmed on Instagram that the latest work, which appeared overnight in the City of London’s financial district, was his own.

Before August 11, they were all dark silhouette images of a goat, elephants, monkeys, a wolf, pelicans and a cat.

The latest offering, however, appears to be a transparent spray paint on the glass windows of the guardhouse, turning it into a sort of giant aquarium.

Two police officers were seen examining the draft and taking photographs of it.

“We are aware of the damage to a City of London Police station in Ludgate Hill,” Detective Chief Inspector Andy Spooner said in a statement.

He pointed out that the police were “in contact” with the local authority that owns the guardhouse.

Two of the seven works that have appeared since August 5 are no longer visible after one depicting a wolf on a satellite dish was stolen in southeast London less than an hour after its unveiling on August 8.

Then, on August 10, a work depicting a stretching cat on an empty, damaged billboard was removed from its site in northwest London by contractors for safety reasons.
