2024 Olympic Games: Neah Evans promises return after the “worst Omnium ever”

Scottish track cyclist Neah Evans has vowed to compete in the next Olympic Games at the age of 38 after finishing her Paris Games with “the worst Omnium I’ve ever had”.

Evans, who had already won a silver medal at the velodrome in Madison, was considered a hot favorite to fight for the podium in the four-point competition on Sunday.

But a serious crash in the final corner of the first points race meant that she was constantly lagging behind.

On that frustrating afternoon, the Aberdeenshire players finished in 15th place.

“Today cannot take away from my performance in the Madison and I really rode a great race,” Evans told BBC Scotland.

“But I’m the type of person who’s going to be disappointed by it, and I wanted to come out and do better because you have so much support behind the scenes.

“It’s just so frustrating. This is the worst omnium I’ve ever been in my life and you think, ‘Why is this at the Olympics?’ but I’ll come back and hopefully I can do better next time.”

Evans, who also won a silver medal in the team pursuit in Tokyo three years ago, added that it had been difficult to recover from the fall.

“In terms of points alone, this is a huge disadvantage,” she added.

“I’m starting from last place and am 40 points behind the leader. And then there are the consequences of my actual injuries from the accident.

“So it was really difficult mentally to get back on my feet, both physically and figuratively.”
