Superbike World Championship: Toprak Razgatlioglu achieves his 12th race win in a row

Toprak Razgatlioglu broke the record for most consecutive World Superbike race wins as he took his 12th consecutive victory with his triumph in Sunday’s Superpole race in Portugal.

The 27-year-old Turkish rider put in another dominant performance on his BMW, crossing the line almost three seconds ahead of Danilo Petrucci. The podium places were completed by British rider Alex Lowes.

Alvaro Bautista (2019 and last year) and Northern Ireland’s six-time champion Jonathan Rea (2018) had previously achieved eleven consecutive victories in the World Superbike races.

Razgatlioglu’s win extends his lead in the series to 87 points over Nicolo Bulega, while defending champion Bautista is now in third place, 117 points behind.

Ducati rider Petrucci led after the first lap, but then Razgatlioglu moved into the lead and was more than two seconds ahead of the Italian rider at the halfway point of the 10-lap race.

After losing the lead, Petrucci had to battle with Lowes for second place before the Englishman briefly lost the final podium spot to Michael van der Mark on lap eight before reclaiming it on the penultimate lap.

Van der Mark held on to fourth place, Bulega and Bautista completed the top six and Rea finished in tenth place.

Lowes remains fourth in the championship standings, 143 points behind Razgatlioglu, while Rea is tenth, around 264 points behind.

The Northern Irishman finished 15th in the first race on Saturday in Portimao, as Razgatlioglu prevailed against strong attacks from Bautista and Petrucci.

Razgatlioglu and the other riders will be back in action later on Sunday in the second race at the Algarve circuit.
