Lucy Cochrane nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Lucy Cochrane of the Portland Pilots women’s basketball team has been nominated as the West Coast Conference nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. This is the third consecutive year a Pilots student-athlete has been nominated and the third consecutive year a basketball player has been nominated.

The NCAA Woman of the Year program recognizes the academic, athletic and community achievements of sophomore females from all three divisions of the NCAA. Nominated by their respective conferences, the student must have completed her bachelor’s degree and received a varsity letter by the summer of 2024. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top 30 – 10 from each division – and then select three finalists from each division. The winner will be announced during a luncheon at the NCAA convention.

Cochrane has been a key piece at the bottom of the Pilots’ lineup for the past three seasons. She has been a starter each of the past three years and has dominated the defense. She led the conference in blocks for the past three seasons. She is Portland’s all-time leading shot blocker with 272 blocks as a Pilot and finished her career eighth among active players in career blocks. Cochrane was second in the nation in both total blocks (102) and blocks per game (3.09) last season.

The Pilots were outstanding on the court last season, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, seventh time ever and third time in five years after winning the 2024 WCC Tournament championship, also their third in five seasons. The Pilots finished the season with an overall record of 21-13 and won over 20 games for the third consecutive year, a first for the program since 1997.
