SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — More than 200 firefighters battled a wildfire northeast of Phoenix on Saturday that threatened dozens of homes and forced dozens of residents to evacuate.

No buildings were damaged as the wildfire crossed an area of ​​nearly 15 square kilometers on the border of the Boulder Heights settlement, said Matthew Wilcox, spokesman for a multi-agency wildfire response team.

On Saturday, 275 people were deployed to fight the fire, as temperatures exceeded 38 degrees Celsius before midday and gusts of wind were expected for the afternoon.

“We still have unseasonably high humidity and hot weather,” Wilcox said. “We don’t have any wind at the moment, but gusts are forecast.”

Firefighting planes and helicopters have helped extinguish flames from the skies above the Boulder View Fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The fire started about 5 miles east of Carefree, just outside northern Scottsdale on the edge of the Tonto National Forest.

The Red Cross set up an evacuation center at a high school in Scottsdale, and shelters for horses and other large animals were built in several locations, including the rodeo grounds at nearby Cave Creek.

In Central California, rising temperatures and low relative humidity could worsen wildfire conditions in the Fresno June Lightning Complex this weekend. The complex — made up of three large fires in eastern Fresno County, as well as several smaller fires — was nearly 17 square miles in size and 42% contained as of Saturday morning. One structure was confirmed destroyed and evacuation orders remained in effect.

Further north, the Apache Fire in Butte County has destroyed 14 structures and damaged two others since Monday. The fire burned one square mile (2.8 square kilometers) and was 95% contained as of Saturday morning.

Firefighters made good progress on the Darlene 3 fire in central Oregon on Saturday. It covered 15 square kilometers and was 50 percent contained as of Saturday morning.

The weather has aided firefighting efforts. Light winds, cooler temperatures and high humidity overnight have helped firefighters make progress. It also allowed the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office to lower the evacuation level for Newberry Estates from Level 3 to Level 2. All other evacuation orders for the area west of Highway 97 have been lifted.
