Ohio Senator JD Vance was confronted by CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday morning about former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, avoiding military service in the Vietnam War.

In an interview with CNN On the state of the nationBash asked Trump’s running mate Vance: “Donald Trump did not serve in the military. He received a medical exemption for bone spurs to avoid serving in the Vietnam War, supposedly as a favor to his father. Do you also find that shameful?”

Vance responded, “I believe Donald Trump did not serve in the military, but he did not lie about it, Dana. I have known Donald Trump for a long time. He really honors our veterans, he honors me for my service,” in an apparent dig at Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the running mate of Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee.

The senator continued, “Donald Trump did not lie about his military service. He did not say he was in Vietnam when he was not. That’s the problem. I’m not criticizing anyone. Whether they served our country or not. I think it’s honorable to serve, but of course a lot of people have reasons not to serve. I criticized someone for whitewashing their record and lying by saying I went to war.”

Walz made a comment in a clip from a 2018 political event about being deployed to combat, even though Walz, who previously served in the Army National Guard, never went to war. The Harris-Walz campaign said the Minnesota governor “misstated” at the time.

Trump has been criticized for his medical deferment from the Vietnam War, which he attributed to bone spurs in his heels. In 2018, the daughters of the podiatrist who diagnosed Trump, then 22, said the diagnosis was made as a favor to his father, Fred Trump, according to a New York Times Report.

This is a developing story and will be updated with additional information.
