New gunshot detection technology pays off in Pueblo!

PUEBLO, Colorado (KKTV) – It’s Wednesday, so grab your cup because it’s time to “spill the tea”!

Each week we partner with the Southern Colorado Business Forum and Digest to bring you the most important business headlines from the region.

This week we have some tea from Pueblo: How well the new shooting technology works!

In just the first four months since implementing ShotSpotter acoustic gunshot detection technology, Pueblo police say they responded to nearly 500 calls, recovered nearly 700 shell casings, collected 15 handguns and five rifles, and arrested or issued 15 people with citation or warnings. Most importantly, the technology proved to be a lifesaver on several occasions when police found victims at the scene and were able to provide medical assistance. The police chief said some of those incidents were not reported to Pueblo police, meaning officers may not have been able to help victims if Shotspotter technology had not raised the alarm.

According to the company, Shotspotter is a gunshot detection technology that “uses sophisticated acoustic sensors to detect, locate, and alert law enforcement and security personnel to illegal firearm incidents in real time. The digital alerts include a precise location on a map (latitude/longitude) with corresponding data such as address, number of shots fired, type of firearm, etc., sent to any browser-enabled smartphone or mobile laptop device, as well as to a police vehicle’s MDC or desktop. This information is key to better protecting officers by providing them with increased tactical awareness. It also enables law enforcement agencies to better engage with their communities and strengthen their mission to protect and serve.”
