Shortly before police learned of Sedano’s disappearance, her partner, Joshua González, was arrested for threatening their young daughter and attacking a police officer outside the Watsonville Police Department.

Gonzalez was shot Saturday night after attacking a police officer outside the police department building. His injuries are currently being treated at a medical center.

“At approximately 9:19 p.m., Gonzalez was outside the Watsonville Police Department building when he called our dispatch center and reported that he was armed with a knife and wanted to hurt the three-year-old child,” the Watsonville Police Department said.

Michelle Pulido, a spokeswoman for Watsonville police, said SFGATE that Gonzalez referred to the young girl as his stepdaughter. The child was unharmed in the incident.

“The first officer to arrive exited his patrol car and ordered Gonzalez to drop the knife. However, Gonzalez ignored his commands and charged the officer, who then opened fire. Gonzalez was transported to an out-of-county trauma center where he is in stable condition,” the department said. “The three-year-old was uninjured and is now in the care of family members.”

After Gonzalez’s arrest, officers attempted to contact Sedano but were unable to reach her. Her family told officers it was “unusual” that Sedano was not returning calls or texts. Police then assumed she was missing and asked the public for help in locating her.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said Sedano’s death is being investigated due to suspicious circumstances.

“The cause and nature of the incident will be determined by our medical examiner and detectives will continue to investigate the case,” the sheriff’s office said.
