Mesa, AZ – Thunderstorms are likely to develop this afternoon and evening over the higher elevations and lower deserts of south-central Arizona, including areas near Mesa. Gusty winds, locally heavy rain and dangerous lightning are the main hazards forecast. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix has issued a thunderstorm forecast for Sunday and warned residents of possible severe weather.

According to the NWS, scattered showers and storms are expected over the higher ground north and east of Phoenix, extending into the Mesa area. Showers in the lower deserts depend on the development of deep outflow lines, which could produce heavy downpours and dust. Gusty winds over 35 mph are also possible, raising concerns about reduced visibility from dust.

Isolated storms could also impact Joshua Tree National Park in southeastern California, bringing similar conditions of gusty winds, heavy rain and lightning. The NWS stresses that all storms can bring deadly lightning and urges residents and visitors to affected areas to stay in their homes during the storms and stay up to date with the latest weather alerts.
