Summary

Moderate to locally light trade winds will prevail over the next 7 days as a high pressure system meanders north of the island chain. Typical summer trade wind weather will prevail, with bands of enhanced moisture moving across the state at times. Showers will favor windward slopes and coasts, particularly at night and during the early morning hours, with some showers reaching windward areas at times.

discussion

Currently at the surface is a 1032 mb high centered about 1600 miles north-northeast of Honolulu, driving moderate to locally breezy trade winds across the island chain this evening. Infrared satellite imagery shows partly cloudy conditions across much of the state, with a little more cloud cover over Oahu and the leeward Big Island. Radar imagery shows scattered showers moving into leeward slopes and coasts, with some of these showers reaching leeward areas at times. The primary focus of the forecast remains on trade wind trends and rain chances over the next few days.
Over the next 7 days, a high pressure system will move north of the state, bringing moderate to locally light trade winds across the island chain, with only minor variations in strength from day to day. As for the rest of the weather details, fairly typical trade wind weather is expected to prevail, with bands of increased moisture periodically moving across the islands. Showers will favor the windward and mauka areas, particularly at night and during the early morning hours, with some showers reaching leeward communities at times.

aviation

Moderate trade winds will strengthen through tomorrow, bringing low clouds and occasional short showers to windward and mountainous regions, producing isolated MVFR CIG. Most showers will be seen overnight and in the early morning hours.
No AIRMETs are in effect. Increased trade wind speeds could bring the potential for weak turbulence downwind of terrain tomorrow.

marine

A high pressure system in the north-northeast of the state is producing moderate to locally strong trade winds. A small boat warning is in effect through early Tuesday for the normally windier waters of Maui County and the Big Island. Moderate to locally strong trade winds are expected to continue for most of next week as the high moves north across the state. Winds may ease somewhat mid-week as a weak low pressure system moves across the state from the east.
The current small southerly swell (13-14 seconds) will hold through tonight and then gradually decrease Sunday and Monday. Several small southerly swells could move through the state next week, creating small waves on south-facing coasts. A small pulse from the north-northwest will keep small waves on north-facing coasts for the rest of the weekend. As the trade winds increase both upriver and locally, expect east-facing surf to gradually build Sunday through the first half of next week. There could also be a small strengthening of surf on east-facing coasts from former Tropical Cyclone Emilia early next week.

HFO Observations/Warnings/Advice

Small Craft Advisory in effect until 6:00 a.m. HST Tuesday for Maalaea Bay, Pailolo Channel, Alenuihaha Channel, Big Island Leeward Waters and Big Island Southeast Waters.
