Women’s HoopDirt | Williams named assistant women’s basketball coach at Florida Memorial

Florida Memorial University (FMU) is pleased to announce the appointment of Markel Williams as its new women’s basketball assistant coach. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Williams brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the program.

“Markel Williams brings a unique blend of experience and passion to our women’s basketball program. His track record as a coach and player demonstrates his commitment to excellence. We are excited to welcome him to the FMU family and I am confident his impact will be felt both on and off the court,” said Kevin Herod, head coach of the Florida Memorial University women’s basketball team.

The Williams Files:

  • Talladega College: Williams was previously an assistant women’s basketball coach at Talladega College. During the 2019-20 season, he compiled an impressive overall record of 28-5, including an undefeated conference season (14-0). Although the team narrowly missed the conference tournament championship, his success was notable.
  • Player experience: In the 2020–21 season, Williams returned to play for the Talladega College men’s basketball team. His contributions helped the team to a 28-5 overall record and the GCAC regular season title. The team made it to the national tournament, where they reached the second round. Williams also played a crucial role in the 2021–22 season, as the team advanced to the NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship game.
  • Research assistant and strength coach: In August 2022, Williams moved into a graduate assistant position and became the strength and conditioning coach for the men’s basketball program. Under his guidance, he achieved a remarkable 31-3 record – the best turnaround in school history after a challenging 1-27 season the previous year. In addition, Williams coached eight other programs on campus.
  • Langston University: In August 2023, Williams took his expertise to Langston University, where he worked with the women’s basketball program. Under his guidance, the team achieved a record of 24-8, and he also oversaw strength and conditioning workouts for eight other programs.

Markel Williams’ commitment and experience make him a valuable addition to the FMU coaching staff.
