New Jersey Transit officials said a fire in a rail car on a rail line in Point Pleasant Beach caused service delays and forced travelers to temporarily transfer to buses.

The train caught fire near Washington Avenue at 12:33 p.m., NJ Transit officials said. Ocean Fire Company No. 1 and Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company No. 2 responded, along with police and other first responders.

According to a statement from the Ocean Fire Company, arriving crews found smoke coming from the train. The conductor reported an active fire under one of the cars, possibly spreading into the car. Crews investigated the fire and discovered a small fire under the stairs leading into the car due to a problem with the train’s electrical supply.

“The fire was contained to the area of the fire and did not spread further,” the statement said. “The fire scene has been turned over to NJ Transit for further investigation.”

On a busy summer Saturday, train service was blocked between Arnold Avenue and Washington Avenue, forcing NJ Transit to replace train service with bus service until the North Jersey Coast Line resumed normal service a few hours later.

NJ Transit has yet to confirm the final results of its investigation into the fire.
