Paris 2024: Australian hockey player arrested for alleged cocaine purchase

A member of the Australian national ice hockey team was arrested in Paris and is in custody for allegedly buying cocaine.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said the man was arrested on Tuesday evening for buying cocaine in the ninth arrondissement.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) did not name the person or specify the offence, but said no charges had yet been brought against the person.

Male player Tom Craig, a 28-year-old silver medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was named in the media, but the BBC could not confirm this.

BBC Sport has contacted AOC and asked if they can confirm it is Craig.

In a statement to the BBC, the prosecutor’s office said: “Police officers who observed a cocaine deal at the foot of a building in the 9th arrondissement (of Paris) on the night of August 6-7 arrested the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in Australia in September 1995, who is said to be a member of the Australian national field hockey team.”

“Due to the quantities of drugs seized from the seller, the investigation was transferred to the drug enforcement agency.”

Both the Australian men’s and women’s ice hockey teams were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championships in Paris.

“The AOC continues to investigate and organize support for the team member,” the panel said.
