Fallen tree destroys car, Suffolk rescue workers help motorists

SUFFOLK, Virginia – Even though Debby is slowly receding, the storm has left its mark.

In Suffolk, a car traveling on Route 58 was crushed by a large tree that was knocked down by the storm.

The chief of Suffolk Fire and Emergency Services told News 3 that rescuing these people was a team effort.

Police, firefighters and ordinary citizens were all on hand to help.

Two cars were hit on Thursday afternoon. One vehicle was crushed under the tree and two people were trapped inside.

Chief Michael Barakey of the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Department said help came from an unexpected group.

“Some passersby or bystanders had helped them get out of the vehicle and they were standing on the side of the road when ladder number six arrived,” Police Chief Barakey said.

Barakey says crews encountered another obstacle upon arrival.

“We had this problem when this large tree blocked westbound 58, a very busy highway,” Barakey said. “At that point, paramedics were taking care of the patients and began systematically removing the tree from Route 58.”

It took over an hour to remove the tree and clear the road. The boss calls it “a team effort.”

“All the firefighters worked with saws, public employees came with front loaders, the towing service came to recover the two affected vehicles,” explained Barakey. “We worked systematically and hand in hand and all 58 were free within an hour and 20 minutes.”

According to Police Chief Barakey, the two occupants of the car suffered minor injuries but did not want to go to the hospital.
