Mount Adams records strongest monthly earthquake activity since 1982

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – In September Mount Adams has recorded almost six times as many earthquakes as would normally be recorded in an entire year.

Earthquake activity around Mount Adams increased in September, with a total of six quakes recorded. The US Geological Survey Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) And Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) said in a statement that the earthquakes observed in September ranged in magnitude from 0.9 to 2.0.

Authorities said Mount Adams typically only experiences an earthquake every two to three years.

“To enhance seismic monitoring capabilities, CVO has received permission from the US Forest Service to install temporary seismic stations south and southwest of Mount Adams. The seismic stations are part of the CVO rapid deployment instrument packages that can be deployed quickly when needed,” the USGS said in a statement on Thursday, October 3, 2024.

“The data from the new temporary stations will be transmitted to CVO and PNSN in real time along with the data from the existing permanent station. This will improve our ability to locate smaller earthquakes with greater certainty and help understand the cause of these earthquakes. The results of our findings will determine whether further action is necessary,” the statement continued.

Currently, the USGS Cascade Volcano Observatory stated that despite increasing earthquake activity, there is no cause for concern. All alert levels on Mount Adams remain normal.

Increased monitoring of the southwest Washington volcano will hopefully help scientists better understand where and why these earthquakes have increased in the last month.
