Detroit Lions named potential trade partner for two stud defensemen

With the NFL’s Nov. 5 deadline fast approaching, the Detroit Lions must act to improve their roster in a season where they have real Super Bowl aspirations.

One area where the Lions need help is the pass rush after veteran edge rusher Marcus Davenport suffered a season-ending elbow injury. Davenport was signed during the offseason to back up star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson.

An NFL analyst, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, suggests the Lions make a trade for disgruntled New York Jets edge rusher Haason Reddick, who remains at odds with the team over his desire for a contract extension.

“Reddick would also be a logical trade target for the Lions, who recently lost edge rusher Marcus Davenport to a biceps injury,” Knox wrote. “The addition of Reddick would give Detroit a top-notch complement opposite Aidan Hutchinson and help bolster a defense that showed some vulnerability in Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks.”

Reddick would be a huge asset to the Lions. The 30-year-old has recorded double-digit sacks in each of the last four seasons, including 16 in his career in 2022. Detroit has the cap space to fulfill its desire for an extension.

Another suggestion Knox makes is for the Lions to trade for Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker, who is in the final year of his contract.

“The Detroit Lions could also be interested in Baker. They are chasing a title and recently placed safety Ifeatu Melifonwu on injured reserve with an ankle/Achilles tendon injury,” Ballentine wrote. “Melifonwu hasn’t played yet this season and the Lions have a solid safety tandem in Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph, but it’s not hard to imagine them finding room for Baker in their secondary rotation.”

As Knox notes, the Lions already have a strong safety duo in Joseph and Branch, so this one isn’t as necessary. However, it’s hard to say no to a six-time Pro Bowler, especially if the price is right. Detroit has a question mark in terms of depth at the position with Melifonwu on injured reserve.

Adding Reddick is the more pressing move, but having Baker on defense would embarrass Detroit for being rich and having a unit capable of taking the team where it wants to go.
