Health authorities warn against cider in unpasteurized drinks

As fall approaches, health authorities are urging consumers to be careful when drinking apple cider, especially unpasteurized versions, which could pose serious health risks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned that consuming unpasteurized apple cider can cause “serious illness or even death.”

Risks of unpasteurized cider

Unpasteurized apple cider that has not undergone heat treatment to kill harmful bacteria may contain pathogens from raw fruit used in production, the FDA says. Consuming such cider increases the risk of foodborne illness, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

“These groups are particularly at risk of serious illness or death from consuming untreated juices,” the FDA said.

To protect consumers, the FDA requires that unprocessed juice products sold in stores be refrigerated and labeled with a clear warning. However, cider sold by the glass at farmers markets, apple orchards, roadside stands and some restaurants is exempt from this requirement, leaving some consumers unaware of the risks.

The FDA recommends consumers check labels on cider purchased at grocery stores, cider mills or farmers markets and, if in doubt, ask about pasteurization.
