According to the search warrant, the murder suspects, Jocelyn Nungaray, are said to be Venezuelan gang members

New search warrants reveal that the suspected killers of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, Franklin Pena and Johan Martinez-Rangel, are possible members of a Venezuelan criminal street gang called Tren de Aragua.

Pena and Rangel were both charged with murder after they were accused of murdering and sexually assaulting Nungaray and then leaving her body under a bridge.

Based on a recent search warrant, investigators believe the two men were members of the Tren de Aragua gang, also known as TdA. After searching the men’s social media accounts including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp, officers discovered that both Pena and Rangel were using emojis associated with the gang.

The TikTok account claimed to be linked to Rangel and used ninja, crossed swords and classic building emojis. He also posted videos of himself wearing Air Jordan brand clothing, also associated with the gang, while making the hand signal used by gang members, investigators say.

A message in Spanish was also posted on Rangel’s alleged social media account, which the search warrant claims was a call to all members inside and outside the country.

According to the search warrant, there were photos on Pena’s TikTok account that showed tattoos known to be from the TdA gang, including two stars, one on each shoulder, and a rose tattoo on his hand. In a video he was also seen wearing Air Jordan and Chicago Bulls clothing.

The search warrant requests data from the two men’s phones and social media accounts showing additional communications linking them to the investigation and the TdA gang.

Both Pena and Rangal are in jail on $10 million bond each in the 12-year-old’s death.

Nungaray’s mother testified before Congress, urging lawmakers to secure the border and pass the Justice for Jocelyn Act. The bill would keep detained immigrants in custody while their cases are pending. The proposal is supported by Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz.
