Frantic search for a missing Texas teenager who disappeared after a walk with his father

Authorities in Texas are desperately searching for a missing teenager with mental health issues who disappeared after going for a walk with her father on Sunday.

Zoe Rowbotham, 16, was last seen around 8.30pm that evening near the junction of Bluebonnet and Arwine Drives in Hurst, where her father briefly abandoned her as he retreated into her home to retrieve his mobile phone.

Her adoptive parents, Catrina and Andre, told NBC DFW that she was anxious about some tasks that night and was scared after learning she might be going to a long-term care facility in Arkansas.

The teenager was diagnosed with conduct disorder, borderline personality disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and depression earlier this year, making her parents even more worried about her safety.

Andre told CBS News that she is “very, very, very smart” but has “poor leadership skills” that affect her maturity, impulse control and ability to tell the truth and cause her to confuse fantasy with reality .

“Zoe has never met a stranger,” he added, noting, “She has a huge heart.”

To make matters worse, her parents said she had no cell phone or money with her at the time of her disappearance.

Andre explained that he went for a walk with his daughter after she became restless on Sunday.

At first, he said, they took their normal route through the neighborhood, but at some point Zoe insisted on taking a different route.

“We were practically halfway through the walk and she just got really defiant,” he said.

“She wouldn’t take the route I wanted, which was the shorter route.” She wanted to take the long route, so I thought I’d go back, get my phone and then catch her at the top of the hill.

“And Catrina knew I was having a hard time and she picked me up in the car. “And when we got to the top of the hill where she should have been, she wasn’t there.”

The Texas couple spent the next few days making phone calls and printing fliers as family, friends, co-workers and police searched for their daughter.

They learned that Zoe had been seen by another family on the other side of a neighborhood park later Sunday, but they remained unclear where she might have gone.

“I don’t know where she is and I don’t know if anyone is hurting her,” Catrina said. “Having had her for four years, I know that’s definitely a possibility.”

On Tuesday, officers issued an Amber Alert for the missing teen, which Catrina said was when the situation really hit her.

“I mean, it was real, but the Amber Alert hit and I thought, ‘My baby is a missing child,'” she said.

“I just want my child,” Catrina added. “I don’t know where she is, I’m worried about her because of the mental illness and her tendency to find trouble without knowing she’s in trouble.”

In an update on Facebook on Wednesday, Catrina said: “Zoe is still not home” and revealed that dogs involved in the search had lost track of her child.

Authorities believe Zoe is on foot and have determined that she has limited mental capacity and requires medication.

Police are also asking neighbors to check their surveillance or doorbell footage for any signs of the teen.

Zoe was last seen wearing a black T-shirt with white lettering, black bike shorts and white shoes.
