San Antonio’s rapid growth underscores the need for continued road work for 1604

SAN ANTONIO – It may seem like construction on 1604 is taking forever, but at a meeting Tuesday, TxDOT assured neighbors that progress is being made, even though the end of the project is still several years away.

If you’ve ever sat in traffic on the 1604, you know the construction is an inconvenience, and unfortunately it’s not going away any time soon. There will still be some construction work until 2027.

Over 100,000 people travel on the 1604 every day and that number will double by 2045.

Residents like Robert Abraham say there is a lot of disruption due to the constant traffic jams on the highway, longer travel times and detours, but he is glad that officials are maintaining open communication.

“I’m worried about it, but it’s important that they do it. The reason is I think San Antonio always comes out on top,” Abraham said.

“We have significant growth. We are one of the fastest growing cities in the United States,” he added.

TxDOT says they understand the frustration, but 2025 will be an important year for progress on the northern extension of Loop 1604.

In fact, the first flyover ramp at the I-10 interchange will open in the coming months. Sections 1 and 3 will be completed in 2025.

We asked Sarah Shakil if she was looking forward to the construction work coming to an end.

“We all are, but good things come with time,” Shakil said.

“Big business won’t happen if you don’t have the infrastructure for it. “People won’t move here if there isn’t the right infrastructure,” she said.

We’re told it’s going to get a little worse before it gets better, but they’re trying to make sure people get home safely and on time. With today’s meeting they want to make sure taxpayers know what’s going on.

TxDOT encourages everyone to subscribe to updates on Loop1604North.com to stay up to date on the latest information on the project.
