Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood volunteer for Habitat for Humanity

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – This week, thousands of volunteers are lending their hands to build dozens of homes for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteers include country stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, who have volunteered with the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project for years.

Brooks and Yearwood lend their voices and hands to the Habitat building in a St. Paul neighborhood.

“There was a year we would like to have back. They fired nail guns at the thing. Her nickname was Nail Gun Diva,” Brooks said.

Regardless of the tool, the couple has been fully involved in Carter’s work project since their first post-Katrina build in 2007.

Her inspiration is the Carters.

“I think he understood throughout his life that with work ethic you can get the result you want. And I think he passes that on to all of us,” Brooks said.

“There is a work ethic deeply ingrained in this group. And I think a lot of the people who work on the Carter building are repeat customers. You know, a lot of people have worked with the Carters, so there’s that feeling. There is this sense of responsibility and celebration. I mean, it’s just such a place of joy and love,” Yearwood said.

Brooks and Yearwood were touched when they heard Habitat for Humanity homeowner Leandra Estes’ story.

“Our mental, physical and spiritual health has completely improved in every way,” Estes said. “And for my entire family, the generational impact is predictable and achievable.”

Yearwood said the work was “inspiring.”

“It inspires me to see a generation younger than me who understands the important, important things in this world and will fight for those things. It makes me feel good about us. I mean, we can find many ways to not feel good every day. And that makes me feel good about who we are,” she said.
